‘Our future is safe in capable hands’

Kumar, who was the chief guest, impressed by the renditions of the upcoming young Arunachalees, said the education department aims at spreading education to the far-flung areas of the state.

Citing the department’s initiative in making available 250 books of National Book Trust and Children’s Book Trust each to 2000 schools in the state, he said books are friends which could equip the GenNext with the required knowledge to face all challenges in life.

“Aberystwyth is a small town with a total population of 20,000 including 10,000 students of Aberystwyth University where 60 lakh books are available and each one on the street, bus, train or park would be found with only books,” he said to drive home his message about the value of books.

Aberystwyth is a major Welsh educational centre in United Kingdom since the establishment of a university college there in 1872.

“The West is rich not with money but knowledge; that is why at every library in the West a long queue of students is visible. Hardly any book lover is seen either at the Itanagar Central Library or any district library in Arunachal,” he rued at the lack of interest in books among the present generations. Appreciating the APLS and its office bearers, especially president YD Thongchi, a Sahitya Akademi awardee, and general secretary Tokong Pertin for their efforts in spreading the light of literature as the mirror of the society, Kumar assured all possible support in its future endeavours for institutionalizing the APLS for it to work consistently for the greater welfare of the Arunachalee society.

Kumar recalled accompanying APLS member and RGU Hindi Associate Professor Jamuna Biny, who anchored the event, to attend the World Hindi Conference at Surinam in 2003 besides instituting the Verrier Elwin Literary Award in 2003 as Papum Pare deputy commissioner.

The APLS felicitated the pioneers and first generation writers Tapang Taki, Tumpak Ete and Wangsam Zongsam for their untiring efforts in ensuring the literature lamp remain lit for decades against all odds.

The trio recalled their decades-long struggles, while Zongsam disclosed how he had turned down the offer for a GoAP job for unearthing the activities of the authority against the society. All three creative writers with the record of penning books lauded the APLS for the honour.

The recipients were given shawls and citations in recognition of their selfless contribution in highlighting the trials and tribulations of the society in different languages notwithstanding criticism from various quarters.

Thongchi, who was instrumental in creating the platform to promote upcoming writers and poets, was thrilled by the overwhelming response.

“I never expected this, but the outcome is a dream-come-true,” he said without mincing any words.

Highlighting the agonies of a writer, author N Lego, speaking as guest of honour, encouraged the GenNext to become torch bearers of the society.

The day was marked by recitation, mostly of self-composed poems by Taso Valin, Epi Miku, Sweta Yadav, Nishita Dutta, Damin Upadhyaya, Jangam Wangpan, Vandita Srivastava, Kripa M Babu, Hiba Meeyo, Madom Tok, Panuloi Tamin, Gyamar Anga, Bake Yape, Taba Aniya, Bamang Pinku, Pani Kaku, Tadar Akap, Yumlam Tamin, Tage Karee, Nabam Kanli; RGU’s MA (Hindi) students Yajum Doke, Niktar Aku, Goyir Badak, Rebom Belo, Oroty Tabi and Chamali Mili besides APLS junior members Pema Choekyi Thongdok, Aryaman Das Borah, Arunika Koley, Lisa Ghosh, Rindo Pertin and senior members Pradeep Kumar and Pill Topu, christened ‘Rainbow’.

But unfortunately for them, their defence was only able to hold off the attack for so long, as five goals were slotted in a span of 15 minutes with GMSC taking an insurmountable lead to take the game away from MSC.

Topon Borah scored again in 54th minute to complete his hat-trick. Lechi Tasar (60th min), Loi Kena (62nd min), Vella Jelly Kino (67th min), and Techi Tasar (69th min) scored a goal each to complete the drubbing of the team.

While the first match was a completely one-sided affair, the second quarter final was as interesting as it looked on paper.

Bamang Taji FC have been around as a team for quite a while now and have been a team to reckon with all throughout the tournament as one of the favourites. However, everyone knew that they would have their task cut out for them when they took on Doimukh FC which comprised of some of the most experienced and skilled players the state has produced.

There were cheers and jeers from the very first whistle as audiences and players alike knew they were about to witness a very interesting match.

One-twos, crossovers, and some good challenges ensured that the excitement levels remained high through much of the match. With great players on both teams, it would take the expertise and the experience of Toko Takar to break the deadlock with a perfectly calculated lob over the BTFC goalkeeper’s head in the 24th minute.

With a goal behind, BTFC searched desperately for an equaliser but the score would remain 1-0 till the break.

DFC players were determined to hold on to their narrow lead and maintained it for the initial ten minutes of the match. However, Tage That of BTFC had other plans as he slotted the ball past the DFC keeper Mingu Bage in the 24th minute to level the match.

Both teams fought hard and long but were not able to break through each other’s defence. The match looked to be heading to penalties as the teams battled in the middle of the park to find a winner which would send them to the semi-finals of the tournament. The deadlock finally came to an end in the 70th minute when player of the match Pura Byai was allowed to be free with the ball just outside the box. In a goal reminiscent of Lionel Messi and Arjen Robben, Byai put his team ahead by curving the ball into the far corner with a shot that would have beaten the best goalkeepers in the world.

Frustration began to build up for DFC and things turned a little ugly when a DFC player began expressing his anger to the referee over a controversial decision in the last moments of the game. From the point of view of the audience, a ball shot in towards the BTFC goal looked suspiciously like a handball but the referee thought otherwise. Unfortunately for DFC, it meant that they were out of the tournament as BTFC went ahead to the semi-final stage.

Tomorrow’s matches are scheduled to be played between West Siang (Basar) FC and ITBP, while Todo United FC face-off against Tarh United SC.

Tale of Jairampur

Dear Editor,

Jairampur, a sub-division under Changlang district is a sub-tropical place that swelters under the scorching sun during the month of May, June, July and August. The steaming climactic condition causes excess sweating from the body even during a mere activity of walking few distance. During these humid months, nature poses a trifling but inevitable challenge before every soul that lives and walks on this part of the earth. The natural vegetation in the form of grass and small plants that were hardly growing a couple inches high during the winter months reach several feet in a few weeks time. Creepy crawling lives close-in from distant jungles posing threats of snake bites and malarial infestation. Every household compound that has an exposed earth is teeming with vegetation and the problem compounds for the larger government building premises. Every man for himself is the norm for once own compound, but, hardly anyone to care for the govt. premises.

No stranger to this problem, our medical compound bears the extra lush green outlook throughout the summer months. Except for once in a very long while, when our fortune takes a good turn to get and greet the helping hands of some concerned people, like the recent act of benevolence extended by the youths of the Evangelical Union (EU) of Jairampur, who had conducted a social service at the medical compound with much enthusiasm. Their help came in right time when the action was most needed. The medical compound since then is much free from the encroaching vegetation and thus free from the swarming mosquitoes and crawling leeches. We the medical staffs in turn could not offer them anything at that time but now will say ‘Thank you’ through your esteemed daily. Also, let’s take the message to the masses this Independence Day that as we cherish our freedom this August, let’s take a cue from the likes of the EU youths of Jairampur and extend our care for our common possessions that we have gotten as a free nation.

Yours,

Dr. S. Ngemu

Is capital road only for VIP and VVIPS?

Dear Editor,

Through your esteemed newspaper, I express my agony as an AAM ADMI and want to awaken conscience of so called VIP's/VVIP's and bully type bellicose people.

Few days ago I was on my way to Naharlagun at around 09:30 AM. From Pappu Nallah onwards, there was an endless traffic jam in our paper thin coated and unfit to be called National Highway Road. It took about an hour to reach Naharlagun because of the following reasons:-

1. The vehicles of so called VIP's and VVIP's elected by AAM ADMI's were breaking the traffic laws.

2. Behind so called VIP's and VVIP's, numerous fake and opportunist vehicles moved at an alarming speed acting like the VIP's and VVIP's vehicles to reach Naharlagun.

3. Even some prudent government servants were breaking the traffic laws along with the bully type public.

I being a lean and thin man could not dare to mend them for reasons and consequences best known to myself and the AAM ADMIS.

Day before yesterday i.e., on 08-08-2013, at around 4 pm, as I was on my way to home while negotiating with the traffic jam on the mega International Highway Road in Ganga, I heard loud siren ahead of my tiny poor car. There ahead of me a VIP vehicle along with mini truck carrying men in camouflage uniform came at an alarming speed. The driver of the said mini truck was engulfed with thrill of speed driving and the said men in camouflage uniform had wide grin as all other vehicles paved way for their vehicle like the rats upon a surprise attack by a cat. Vehicles on both the side of the road negotiated themselves towards the left and right side of the road. Being scared of the said ultra supersonic vehicles, I also started to negotiate my poor car towards the left side of the road but then I heard my poor car cry out in pain. Thereafter, I parked my yelling car at a safe place and saw numerous long scratches on the right side of my car. I wanted to follow the said mini truck to note down the Registration No., but left the idea because, my poor car’s cry for justice may be mocked or I may get justice after my car’s several tyres are worn out or after I have disposed of my poor car after several years of dragging on super highways. All would say that the damage is trivial but just think as an AAM ADMI, what would happen if a common mans (AAM ADMI’s) poor vehicle causes even a minimum bruise on the vehicle of VIP's or VVIP's or to the vehicles of their convoys. As a prudent AAM ADMI I can undoubtedly presume that, my bruised car is not the sole victim. It doesn't mean that vehicles of all VIP and VVIP are the same. My small eyes have also witnessed some VIP and VVIP vehicles moving on road decently. Such VIP and VVIP set's a good example for the AAM ADMI and especially for the bully type bellicose public.

I presume that my few words are sufficient to awaken conscience of all the violators of traffic laws. I also presume that the prudent law makers and administrators act tough against all the traffic violators. Hope next time in our pothole highway an AMM ADMI will see the vehicles of rich, powerful and influential people moving decently. It is my humble request to throw a net which not only catches the small fishes but also the big mammals like whales, else today or tomorrow one among AAM ADMI's poor vehicle will be kissed by the driver's of vehicle performing stunts during traffic jam. Now I am sure that all the sane District Administrators of my beautiful state will be kind enough to implement the laws/rules/notifications/guidelines relating to use of beacon light and designation plate.

Lastly, I quote what Hon'ble Supreme Court had said, "Use of beacon on government and private vehicles should be drastically restricted so that the right of freedom of movement of people is not affected”.  Status is enhanced not by travelling in beacon vehicles but by work done by them.

No one is bothered about plight of DRDA employees

Dear Editor,

Nature is providing so many things but we the human being are exploiting it without knowing its future importance. Likewise, the same is happening to DRDA Department of Arunachal Pradesh. DRDA department provides so many rural schemes like MNREGA, SGSY, IAY, SGRY, IWMP/Hariyali projects etc. to the state Govt, which help in eradication of poverty in rural areas. Through these schemes each and every sections of society are benefited. It may be local citizen, common people, PR leaders, politicians and high profile officers. Their main is to extract whatever opportunities available under DRDA schemes.

On the other hand no one has time to ask the employees of DRDA’s, whether they are getting their salary or not? How they serve the people in such a pathetic condition? Why they are crying for their absorption? Why they are not getting their salary for the past many months? Why they are ignored by the state as well as central govt.? Why they are devoid of basic rights and neglected from their genuine opportunities? Why does the state govt, have no proper solution for DRDA employees which give lots to our state?

In my opinion, the state govt, have to absorb the DRDA employees in the line department by viewing the importance of DRDA department. One positive step by the govt, will open a lifeline to all the employees of DRDA.

Yours,

Tamo Karko

Inclusive education

Two new studies on School Management and Teacher Cadre Management, released by Save the Children, have revealed interesting insights into how schools can be made better and how the quality of teachers needs to be treated as a serious issue.

The study on School Management for Quality Inclusive Education reveals that although there is some improvement towards making schools more inclusive, there is no substantive evidence of linkages between different levels/layers of decentralization and how it facilitates quality inclusive education.

However, the study has highlighted that even where the overall education mechanism does not provide for true decentralization, a motivated and highly committed head of the school can and does make a big difference. A combination of a good head teacher and a team of good teachers is the ultimate formula of a well-managed, sensitive and engaged school.

The study has highlighted that while school level committees have been created in almost all the states they are involved mainly in supervision of civil works, mid-day meals, monitoring enrolment and attendance of children, mobilizing resources for school supplies According to the study, committees in a few states also monitor the attendance and regularity of teachers but they are not involved in academic monitoring or providing academic support to schools.

The study has highlighted that the pro-active involvement of community and a highly motivated head master could bring a change in the education system. This is a two-way process. The literature also points to the need for synergy between all three - head master (the school as an institution), the VEC or SDMC (parents and community) and the Panchayat (local self governance institutions). Where the three came together then school governance improved.
